Epidural steroid injections may be used to help reduce inflammation that is causing the pain. This type of injection is performed under fluoroscopic guidance which allows the physician to place the steroid medication at the precise level of the spine. The medication will start providing relief anytime between 3-10 days after the injection. The amount and duration of relief varies from patient to patient. Some patients receive enough relief from the first injection and they are able to resume their normal activities or start physical therapy treatment. Other patients benefit from 2 or 3 injections.
